Miles Macadam recently partnered with Breedon on a major resurfacing project at Stena Line’s 12 Quays Terminal in Birkenhead, supporting the expansion of the facility with a high-performance surfacing solution designed for demanding port conditions.
The project involved the creation of two new trailer parks and approximately 200 additional parking spaces on a former infilled dock. With the site subject to heavy vehicle movements and potential ground movement, the surfacing solution needed to combine strength, durability and flexibility, while also providing resistance to fuel and the stresses associated with static and slow-moving heavy vehicles.
Working alongside Breedon, Miles Macadam supplied 1,088 tonnes of Hardipave™ for the surface course. BBA HAPAS-approved Hardipave™ is a cementitious grouted macadam engineered for heavy-duty applications, combining the flexibility of an asphalt base with the strength and fuel resistance required for demanding environments.
The Hardipave™ surface formed part of a multi-layered asphalt solution, with Breedon supplying more than 11,800 tonnes of EME2 for the base and binder courses. Across the project, more than 14,000 tonnes of material were supplied in multiple phases between October–November 2024 and February–March 2025, with average daily deliveries of around 500 tonnes.
The project also required close coordination between the supply and delivery teams. Breedon’s Liverpool asphalt plant provided the material, with its Wrexham plant on standby to support continuity of supply, while the EME2 and Hardipave™ courses were laid by Jones Bros Ruthin (Civil Engineering) Ltd.
