Preston New Road is a key primary route linking Preston and Blackpool and serves as one of the main east–west access corridors into the town. The three-lane dual carriageway passes residential estates, housing developments, local businesses and a major supermarket, carrying high volumes of mixed traffic including commuters, tourist traffic and HGVs. As a result of these demanding traffic conditions, the junction had become severely deteriorated, with significant potholing, rutting across all three lane approaches, and widespread deformation. Joint failures and aggregate loss were also evident throughout the site. To address these issues, 6,019m² of Milepave Ultra™ PMB was installed due to its suitability for high-stress strategic routes. The addition of a polymer-modified binder (PMB) significantly enhances the strength and durability of the material, creating a robust surface capable of withstanding intensive traffic flows, heavy goods vehicle loading and continual stresses associated with a heavily trafficked route. This improved resilience provides greater resistance to rutting and wear, helping to deliver a longer-lasting, high-performance carriageway capable of meeting the demands of the network.
