Reading Borough Council, in partnership with Miles Macadam, have together tried to significantly reduce their carbon footprint while working on highway improvement schemes across the borough. For several years, the Council have utilised Miles Macadam’s reduced carbon product Milepave™ in their maintenance programme, recently decided to further their commitment to Net Zero, by commissioning Miles Macadam in an innovative project to trial their latest zero carbon resurfacing material, BIOSEAL™. This is the first time this has been utilised on the highway network. Delivered Programme of Work: 9,747m² of surfacing 844 tonnes of 40mm Milepave 45 t CO₂e total emissions Environmental Savings: Savings of 110 tonnes of aggregates and 15 tonnes of straight run bitumen over conventional materials 2 t CO₂e saving over a conventional warm mix material and a non carbon neutral surfacing contractor (the equivalent of 50,000 car miles) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): The trial involved the laying of Miles Macadam’s Milepave™ road surfacing material which achieves a 40% carbon saving over conventional surfacing materials due to its lower resource and energy utilisation during manufacture. To further reduce the carbon footprint of the material, Miles Macadam resurfaced a section of the highway using BIOSEAL™, a biogenically modified asphaltic grout. This Biogenic material is a solid-state organic carbon by-product, permanently locking away the carbon, utilising the road surface as a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) vessel. This is the first step towards the creation of zero carbon road surfacing materials. Zero Carbon BIOSEAL™ is the outcome of Carbon Capture and Storage equalling the Carbon Cost of Production.
