Miles Macadam recently resurfaced Victoria Square roundabout in Portland, Dorset, upgrading 3,145m² of carriageway and approaches with 14mm Milepave Ultra™ 68PSV at 50mm, alongside 392 tonnes of AC20 binder course laid at 60mm.

Victoria Square is a heavily trafficked roundabout serving Portland and acts as a key route for articulated HGVs and 8-wheelers transporting Portland Stone to the mainland. The combination of sustained heavy vehicle loading and high daily traffic volumes had resulted in significant surface deterioration, including severe rutting in the wheel tracks and widespread aggregate loss throughout the roundabout and its approaches. Milepave Ultra™ was selected for its ability to provide a highly resilient, flexible and durable surface capable of withstanding demanding traffic conditions while reducing the need for future maintenance intervention.

Milepave Ultra™ consists of a paver-laid, PMB open-graded asphalt surface course sealed using an asphaltic grout. This secondary sealing process reinforces the surface structure by sealing the asphalt matrix and joints, reducing aggregate loss, enhancing flexibility and slowing oxidisation. The result is a durable, long-life surfacing solution designed to improve whole-life performance while minimising vulnerabilities commonly associated with traditional asphalt surfaces.

In addition to its performance benefits, Milepave Ultra™ supports sustainability objectives through reduced aggregate and bitumen usage, lower mixing temperatures and extended service life, contributing to lower whole-life carbon costs compared with traditional asphalt materials.

The Victoria Square scheme was successfully completed over four night shifts in September 2024, minimising disruption to road users while delivering a robust and sustainable resurfacing solution for this critical transport route.
