Miles Macadam have recently completed a reduced carbon resurfacing scheme in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council and Via East Midlands. In response to climate change, the Council declared an emergency and committed to becoming carbon neutral for its activities by 2030 and achieve a net zero Nottinghamshire by 2050.

Miles Macadam was commissioned to resurface 4,000m² of residential roadway on The Ropewalk using Milepave™. Located in the heart of Southwell, The Ropewalk is near the town centre, with several businesses and a doctor’s surgery in close proximity. Given Southwell’s popularity as a tourist destination, with Southwell Minster just minutes away, careful planning was essential to ensure minimal disruption to residents and maintain access throughout the project. The surface was planed to a depth of 40mm in most areas, while severely deteriorated sections were planed to 100mm to accommodate the inclusion of a binder course. Milepave™ is a reduced carbon surfacing process using less resources, lower mixing temperatures and a lower bitumen content when compared to traditional asphalt materials. This process involves removing the existing failed asphalt surface, applying a bond coat, and resurfacing the site with the Milepave™ system. The unique grouting process creates a durable and fully sealed surface that is highly resistant to water damage, stone loss, and oxidisation. As a result, the Milepave™ surface outperforms conventional asphalt materials, leading to lower overall costs and substantial carbon reductions.

Miles Macadam have provided a sustainable, long-term solution for Nottinghamshire County Council through Milepave’s reduced carbon qualities and durable performance characteristics. Also, as a carbon neutral organisation, no Indirect Emissions are attributable to the Council, facilitating their goal of a low carbon footprint scheme.
