Miles Macadam was commissioned to carry out resurfacing works on a mini roundabout situated in a busy town centre location, adjacent to a supermarket and surrounded by local amenities. This roundabout experiences relatively high volumes of traffic throughout the day, with frequent turning movements and continual loading from delivery vehicles and cars navigating the tight layout. The existing surface was suffering from advanced deterioration, including extensive cracking and severe aggregate loss. Previous attempts to resurface the area with conventional asphalt had resulted in multiple joints across the roundabout, which proved vulnerable to premature failure. The continuous tight turning and skewing action of vehicles had accelerated this breakdown, leading to ongoing maintenance issues. Recognising the need for a more durable and long-term solution, Westmorland and Furness Council specified Hardipave™, a high performance cementitious grouted surface course renowned for its strength, flexibility, and jointless finish. Hardipave’s ability to resist deformation and fuel contamination made it ideally suited to this highly trafficked and challenging location. Approximately 830 m² of 14 mm Black Hardipave™ was installed, following the application of a 60 mm binder course across the entire roundabout. This approach not only enhanced the structural integrity of the surface but also ensured lasting durability under the unique loading and turning pressures presented by the site. The jointless nature of Hardipave™ significantly reduces the risk of future cracking and joint failure, offering a long-term, low-maintenance solution for this essential town centre junction.
